![]() ![]() ![]() One highlight is 'Hazard', which takes place in a yawning canyon containing a lake of toxic sludge. This two-part level is the point at which Prodeus reveals its hand, with subsequent maps all revolving around a particular concept or mechanic. The early levels, for example, see you following a monorail through various facilities on the game's beleaguered asteroid, until you come to the epicentre of the war between order and chaos, descending into a vast crater to the fortress at its nadir. The effect is that you passively intuit the function of these locations as you violently redecorate them. In its map design, Prodeus splits the difference between the abstracted labyrinths of Doom and the more logically coherent spaces of Half-Life, shifting seamlessly between the two in dreamlike fashion. That personality emerges once Prodeus has reacquainted you with the basics, delivering increasingly intense encounters in increasingly creative levels. Levels are busy with enemies from the off, and become incredibly intense by the end. Combined with the deeply brown appearance of Prodeus' opening levels, and it initially doesn't appear to have much of a personality beyond its hybrid visual style and lashings of gore. Most of the foes you face are thinly disguised variants of Doom's demonic adversaries, with legally distinct versions of imps, pinkies and cacodemons referencing Prodeus lineage. Its weirdest weapon is a late-game twist on Unreal Tournament's Biorifle that isn't much fun to wield, and there's some of that same conservatism in much of its enemy roster. The highlights though, are the chaingun and plasma rifle, both of which are perfect for shredding through the hordes of foes Prodeus throws at you.Īlthough well designed, there's nothing especially radical within Prodeus' weaponry. Other weapons include a rocket launcher with a delightful pump-action reload, and a lightning-rifle with a railgun alt-fire that cracks like thunder. The shotgun has clearly been iterated upon obsessively, with a bassy default fire that never fails to satisfy. Beneath the gristle Prodeus understands this too, combining smooth, speedy player movement with an arsenal of reliably punchy weapons. Levels blend abstract arenas and mazes with more architecturally coherent spaces like this.īut as Nintendo demonstrated, a shooter doesn't need to be violent to be satisfying. None of which is to mention how it sounds - I've never heard a sprite squelch quite the way I have in Prodeus. In more crowded scenes Prodeus turns into an X-Rated version of Splatoon, with your weapons coating entire rooms in internal fluids of various colours. Fire your shotgun into the chest of a zombie grunt and their torso will disintegrate like service station toilet paper, splattering surrounding terrain in near-comical amounts of blood. Glisten is the optimal word for describing Prodeus' gibbage - the violence here is striking, and stylishly over-the-top. When you fire a rocket or shoot an explosive barrel, the resulting blast will illuminate the scene in a fiery orange glow, while environmental light sources glisten off gunmetal corridors and rain-slicked terrain. Terrain and environments are rendered in angular 3D, while objects and enemies are presented as chunky sprites (although there's an option to swap them for 3D models too). Prodeus' amalgamated personality is evident in its visual style, which mimics the 2.5D graphics of early id-tech and Build engine games then infuses it with modern lighting and visual effects. Availability: Out now for PC, PS4, PS5 and Xbox Series S/X, coming 7th October to Nintendo Switch. From your perspective, both sides are equally in your way, and will die by the hundreds, if not thousands, as you carve a path across the surface of the asteroid and beyond. You're an archetypal space marine trapped on a barren but mineral rich asteroid, where a cataclysm has resulted in an all-out war between two interdimensional factions – one representing order, and the other chaos. This is an anachronistic high-wire act, synthesising old and new ideas in a way that is always exciting, occasionally inspired, and defies easy categorisation.Įven the base premise is wilfully elusive, although this is well in the spirit of the genre's foundational texts. But none walk that line as precisely as Bounding Box Software's Prodeus. Bounding Box delivers an anachronistic high-wire act, and the perhaps the best shooter outright since Doom Eternal.Įvery retro shooter straddles the line between classic and modern design, whether it's a new game built in an old engine like Ion Fury and Wrath, or a good old-fashioned murderfest that uses cutting edge tech like Amid Evil. ![]()

![]() ![]() Sometimes there's a good reason for a caller to modify the Caller ID (for example, a caller who wishes to leave an 0800 number for you to call back if you want). However, there have been growing instances of nuisance callers and criminals deliberately changing the Caller ID, a practice known as 'spoofing'. This feature – known as 'Caller ID' or 'Calling Line Identity' (CLI) – is a handy way of screening the calls you want to answer from the ones you don't. The “minstrel” charge was finally aimed less at Hurston’s subjects, however, than at her language. In Wright’s account, her novel contained “no theme, no message, no thought.” By depicting a Southern small-town world in which blacks enjoyed their own rich cultural traditions, and were able to assume responsibility for their own lives, Hurston appeared a blithely reassuring supporter of the status quo. Against the tide of racial anger, she wrote about sex and talk and work and music and life’s unpoisoned pleasures, suggesting that these things existed even for people of color, even in America and she was judged superficial. She had written a love story-“Their Eyes Were Watching God”-and become a counter-revolutionary. Hurston was at the height of her powers in 1937, when she first fell seriously out of step with the times. ![]() For anyone who looks at her difficult life and extraordinary legacy straight on, it is nearly impossible to get this disarming conjure artist to represent any cause except the freedom to write what she wanted. Yet, despite the almost sanctified status she has achieved, Hurston’s social views are as obstreperous today as they were sixty years ago. All her major work has been republished (most recently by the Library of America), she is the subject of conferences and doctoral dissertations, and the movie rights to “Their Eyes Were Watching God”-which has sold more than a million copies since 1990-have been bought by Oprah Winfrey and Quincy Jones. in 1975, interest in this neglected ancestress has developed a seemingly unstoppable momentum. Nevertheless, since Alice Walker’s “In Search of Zora Neale Hurston” appeared in Ms. In this respect, she was the unlikeliest possible candidate for canonization by the black- and women’s-studies departments. Southern literature was filled with Negro portraits not so different from that of Bigger Thomas, the hero of Wright’s 1940 bombshell, “Native Son.” In the making of a revolution, all that had shifted was the author’s color and the blame.Īs for Hurston, the most brazenly impious of the Harlem literary avant-garde-she called them “the niggerati”-she had never fit happily within any political group. In American fiction, after all, there was nothing new in the image of the black man as an inarticulate savage for whom rape and murder were a nearly inevitable means of expression. The advent of Richard Wright was a political event as much as a literary one. That famed outpouring of novels and poems and plays of the twenties, anxiously demonstrating the Negro’s humanity and cultural citizenship, counted for nothing against the bludgeoning facts of the Depression, the Scottsboro trials, and the first-ever riot in Harlem itself, in 1935. For the first time in America, a substantial white audience preferred to be shot at.īlack anger had come out of hiding, out of the ruins of the Harlem Renaissance and its splendid illusions of justice willingly offered up to art. It says something about the social complexity of the next few years that it was Wright who became a Book-of-the-Month Club favorite, while Hurston’s work went out of print and she nearly starved. ![]() Worse, he accused Hurston of cynically perpetuating a minstrel tradition meant to make white audiences laugh. Reviewing Hurston’s novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God” in the New Masses the previous fall, he had dismissed her prose for its “facile sensuality”-a problem in Negro writing that he traced to the first black American female to earn literary fame, the slave Phillis Wheatley. Wright, the troubling newcomer, had already challenged her authority to speak for their race. “There is lavish killing here,” she wrote, “perhaps enough to satisfy all male black readers.” Hurston, who had swept onto the Harlem scene a decade before, was one of the very few black women in a position to write for the pallidly conventional Saturday Review. Richard Wright’s first published book, “Uncle Tom’s Children,” was made up of four novellas set in a Dismal Swamp of race hatred, in which not a single act of understanding or sympathy occurred, and in which the white man was generally shot dead. In a regression-like experiment such as this, there is no single treatment level that is the control since every data point collected can have a different value. For example, we might test a drug by administering it in doses that vary from zero to some maximum value. In contrast, in a linear regression we assume that the experimental factor has a varying effect that increases linearly with the size of the factor. That effect manifests itself by creating a difference in the mean value of the measured quantity. In a simple one-factor experiment such as the blood pressure study example of Sections 4.2 through 5.3, we assume that the presence of the factor has a fixed effect on the size of the measured quantity in the trials. In this case, we additionally state that the factor graphed on the horizontal axis has a significant effect on the factor graphed on the Y axis. If the deviations from a slope of zero are great enough for the value of P to fall below 0.05, then we say that the best fit line differs significantly from zero. In this particular test, P states the probability that a slope as great or greater than that of the best fit line would occur due to chance deviations from an actual slope of zero. Recall the general interpretation of P: if the null hypothesis were true, P is the probability that deviations as great as or greater than those seen in the sample would occur due to chance unrepresentative sampling. When we conduct the regression statistical test, the software will calculate a value of P. In a regression, our null hypothesis is that the slope of the best fit line is zero. We can frame this situation using the same language of Section 5.2. Because there were only five data points, this would be a fairly likely outcome. However, one could make the case that tail-waging rate is unrelated to treat size and that it was simply a coincidence that the points on the right side of the graph were higher than those on the left side. ![]() In the example to demonstrate how to create a scatter plot in Excel, we saw that the best-fit line through the treat size/tail-wagging rate data had a positive slope. A linear regression can facilitate both of these uses. If the tail wagging rate were completely random and not affected by the size of the treat, the best-fit line would be horizontal, showing that the average wag rate was the same regardless of the treat size. ![]() In that case, what we want to know is whether the slope of the best fit line is different from zero or not. We may not actually care about describing the way that the factors vary (the equation) we may just want to know if they vary significantly or not. In that case, we simply want to know if changing the size of the treat has a significant effect on the rate of tail wagging. The other important use of linear regression is as a statistical test of significance. If we know the equation of the best-fit line we can plug numbers into it to calculate the predicted value. In the example, we might like to predict how fast the tail will be wagged given a treat which is a size that we didn't specifically measure. One important use of linear regression is predictive. When we fit the best line through the points of a scatter plot, we usually have one of two goals in mind. (There is another chart type that Excel makes which does that - don't use it!) The name of the process used to create the best-fit line is called linear regression. In scientific graphs, one almost never "connects the dots". That's why another name for trendline is best-fit line. It may or may not actually pass through any particular points. You should notice that the trendline is the best line that fits through the points. In the example above, we had Excel calculate and plot a linear trendline through the points.
